It’s a truth universally acknowledged that college students are broke. Broke broke broke.
One of the many awesome things about the Capital Region, though, is there are lots of free things to do to keep yourself entertained. Sure, you can definitely blow your money at the restaurants, movies, and the track, but here are a few things you can do instead that’ll leave you flushed with cash. (Relatively speaking.)
That’s right: an entire very entertaining museum chock full of stuff to look at, interact with, read, and learn about—totally free.
Pack a picnic and a book and a frisbee and enjoy the lush greenery of Albany’s Washington Park—an oasis in the city.
3. The Albany Pine Bush Preserve
We’re lucky to have this nature preserve—the pine barren landscape is one of about 20 on the entire planet. There are about 20 miles of multi-use, year-round trails if hiking and walking and looking at nature is your thing.
4. Cohoes Falls

This 70-foot waterfall in Cohoes can be seen from Cohoes Falls Overlook Park, located at School and Cataract streets in Cohoes, or from Falls View Park, on North Mohawk Street. Falls View Park is open during daylight hours from May through October.
5. Corning Tower Observation Deck
This is the place to take your parents when you want to blow their minds. And it’s totally free. Take the elevator up to the 42nd floor and get yourself a 360-degree view of the gorgeous Capital Region.
6. First Friday

Want to see the Albany Institute of History and Art, but don’t want to pay the admission fee? First Friday is your big moment. On the first Friday of every month, art galleries offer specials and freebies. Plus, you’ll hear some live music, too.
Wondering what else the Capital Region has in store for you? We could talk for hours about all the things you can do here. Talk to Admissions to find out more.
