Adios, Peru!

I’m back on the MV Explorer after three days in Peru. I left the ship with 10 other voyages to travel to Machu Picchu. It took a plane,
bus, and a train to get to Aguas Calientes, which is at the base of the mountain. Our transport at the airport didn’t show up, so it was quite an adventure to scramble to find a new one and still get to our train on time. We wound up sprinting to the train as they closed the gates, but we made it! When we got off the train, we found a place with some ethnic foods. One of my friends was feeling adventurous that night and ordered guinea pig. It still had the head and claws attached… GROSS! He said it didn’t taste very good and I think I’ll just trust him on that one.

The next morning we woke up at 4:30 to get ready, eat, and catch the bus to Machu Picchu. A couple girls and I climbed the Intipuncu Trail (Sun Gate) to the peak of one of the mountains.. These people must have been in shape! It took us about an hour and a half round trip, including frequent stops to recover from the steep incline and hundreds of stairs. The view from the top was amazing. We could see all of Machu Picchu below. It’s amazing that the Inca could build such a large empire without the use of tools. All of the stones fit together perfectly without anything to hold them together. We spent about seven hours walking around and still didn’t see everything. This place was huge! They say that what we saw is only 40% of the original empire and the rest has yet to be recovered from underground.

This trip was one of the best trips ever. We got to see Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes, Cusco, and Miraflores before returning to the ship. It was a little stressful at times in terms of transportation, but in the end we all had an amazing time and came out with a new group of friends. I’m now looking forward to our next port of call in Manta, Ecuador.
