About Emily Meier

Greetings! I’m a Clifton Park, New York native named Emily (Em for short) and I work for Upstate Concert Hall. I’m a concert enthusiast who’s seen over five hundred bands perform live in my lifetime. I am a freshman major in Communications (with a concentration in Film and New Media) and I work in the Career Center at Saint Rose. My dream is to travel the world and experience all that life has to offer me and stop to enjoy the little things. When I’m not studying, I’m usually out exploring the city with friends or napping in my room in Brubacher.

Meet the grad assistants-Career Center style! Part 3

Hey all! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving break. I would have if I wasn’t so stressed over finals!

Cate and I recently caught up for my most recent string of blogs that highlights our talented Career Center graduate assistants. A graduate of University at Albany who studied Rhetoric and Communication, Cate is now in the Mental Health Counseling graduate program here at the College.

When I asked Cate what she wants to do after college, she replied with, “Last semester I chose to do a semester long study on veterans in my social & cultural foundations class with Dr. Jelane Kennedy.  It opened my eyes to veterans issues and ignited a passion in me to continue to learn more about them.  I’d love to work with veterans.  Further down the road, I plan on having my own private practice.  And at some point, I would love to incorporate equine (horses!) therapy into my practice.  I love horses and can’t wait to have my own.” It’s great to learn that she is truly following her passion and creating a job tailored to her wants and dreams!

Already thinking about finding a career before you graduate? Well Cate has some advice for you! “Yes.. network, network, network!  I didn’t realize the benefit of it for a while, but now I cherish the network I’ve built so far.  Who you know is just as important as what you know.  The sooner you start making connections, the better off you’ll be once you graduate.  Don’t be afraid of networking.  It can actually be a lot of fun.  And don’t forget about LinkedIn!  Everyone should have a LinkedIn account, regardless of their program/field.  And by the way, did you know that we can help you with your LinkedIn account here in the Career Center as well!? ;)  And don’t forget to connect with the Career Center and join their subgroup the Career Advisory Network too.”

I wish you all the best of luck as finals week quickly approaches!

Meet the grad assistants-Career Center style! Part 2

Ever wonder who’s behind all the genius of The College of Saint Rose Career Center on the third floor of Saint Joe’s? Well, in this installment of my blog, we’ll be featuring a different staff member each time.

Meet Career Center Graduate Assistant, Amanda Shaw, who was an Environmental Studies undergraduate major (with two minors in Political Science and French and Francophone Studies!!!) at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. She is now in the College Student Services Administration Graduate Program here, and when asked about what finalized her decision to attend Saint Rose, she replied, “I was already familiar with the College Student Service Administration program because my sister had gone through the program and enjoyed it immensely. I was looking to move to a new location that was closer to my family and Albany was the perfect place to look for a graduate school. After interviewing at Saint Rose, I knew that I could see myself being happy here!” From my point of view, Saint Rose really does attract families-not just one family member! I know so many people whose parents or siblings are alumni here as well.

Amanda would love to travel to Europe before getting a job at a small liberal arts college. She loves working with the students here and suggests that you get involved on campus in any way possible to have the best experience here! To anyone who wishes to work in an office at a small liberal arts college like Amanda, she has advice for you: “I would recommend talking to professionals in the field to see how their experiences have been and how they got to be where they are now.”

And here’s the answer to the question you all wanted to know: What’s Amanda’s favorite animal? Just like Jennifer’s, it’s a penguin!

Meet Career Center Graduate Assistant, Jennifer Villalobos, who was a Sports Psychology undergraduate major at California State University in Long Beach. She is now in the College Student Services Administration Graduate Program here, and when asked about what finalized her decision to attend Saint Rose, she replied, “The internship component, GA availability, and change of scenery.” Jennifer also commented that one of her favorite parts about being a grad assistant was getting “to learn more about the employers in the Albany area” because she is from out of state.

Jennifer wants to work in the DC area for a Division I university as an athletic advisor for student-athletes. When asked to give advice to students who want to follow a similar career path, Jennifer replied, “I would advise them not to be afraid to pursue something you are passionate about, since the field can often times be demanding. Finding a job can be tricky, but all the resources you need are within your reach! Talk to your professors, join associations, and NETWORK! Visiting the Career Center to put together a stellar resume wouldn’t hurt your chances either!”

And her favorite animal? A penguin!
