Did You Know? – Grad Edition: The Community Service Office

Office:  The College of Saint Rose Community Service

Where:  950 Madison Avenue

How:  Stop in the office, call the Director of Community Service, Ken Scott at:(518) 458-5359, or email: communityservice@strose.edu

Why: There are many reasons to get involved with service opportunities in the community.  But did you know that The College of Saint Rose offers a place, right here on campus, to find out more information about the community service opportunities available and the ways to become more involved?  Some of you may be wondering WHY you should get involved in the first place when you lead busy lives and may be juggling many different responsibilities, which is why below I have listed some of the main reasons community service is a worthwhile experience as seen in the video above:

  • Personally:  Community service can challenge you and can present you with an opportunity for personal growth and new learning experiences.  It can serve as a catalyst to push you outside of your comfort zone and into different experiences that you may have otherwise not had the opportunity to be a part of.
  • Academically:  Community service can help you to learn a great deal about yourself and others.  You can  find a way to bring what you are discovering and learning out in the community, into the classroom.  Applying community service experiences to academic work, will help you to form deeper analyses of issues and serve to make the material more meaningful and relevant.
  • Socially:  Community service can help you to meet new people and build long lasting relationships with individuals that you may have otherwise not had the opportunity to cross paths with.
  • Occupationally:  Community service experiences can serve as resume builders, topics of conversation in job interviews, and as helpful networking opportunities.

There are many different organizations around Albany seeking volunteers including Refugees and Immigrant Supports Services of Emmaus (where I currently volunteer), In Our Own Voices, Albany Boys and Girls Club, Girls Inc., Albany Damien Center, the Saint Anne Institute, and Habitat for Humanity.  Stop by the Community Service office here at Saint Rose to learn more about all the different ways you can become involved.
