Emotional Behavior Disorders… I’m INTRIGUED!

It feels like yesterday that I was on break and at home relaxing. Reality gave me a nice kick in the butt yesterday, when I realized I had tons of homework and a research assignment to complete! However this semester, I am taking a course on Emotional Behavior Disorders as part of my Professional Special Education Program and I am absolutely excited and interested in the topic. Although we’ve only had two classes, I feel as though I’ve learned so much so far. In light of the recent tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, mental health has become under the spotlight, along with other issues such as school security and gun laws. Mental Health is a huge field that as special educators, we look to School Psychologists and Behavioral Therapists for help interpreting. Thusfar, we’ve looked at the classification of Emotional Disturbance Disorder and learned just how difficult it is to identify children as having such disorder. You may THINK you could identify a child, but it’s nowhere near as easy as we think it is!! This raises a lot of questions about why it’s so difficult and what happens to children who may not have such a classification.

All interesting stuff!! The semester is off to a great start and I am excited to see what’s to come!  Are you taking any classes that are sparking your interests? What are you taking and what’s extraordinarily awesome about it? Feel free to share your thoughts!

What do you think?
