I met Rachel May ’13 through New Orleans alternative spring break trips. Since graduation she has been with Americorps in NOLA. Rachel was a transfer student who was so active on campus it was like she was always here. I asked her to share a guest post about her transfer experience–

The College of Saint Rose hooked me in at a college fair they were holding at my community college. The reason I chose to transfer to Saint Rose was that they offered me the best scholarship and I was really interested in the forensic science major, though I ended up changing to criminal justice. Also, the majority if not all of my credits from Herkimer Community College transferred over.

I was involved in a few clubs and sports at Saint Rose, which included: cheerleading, adventure club, student events board (SEB), and the Natural Science Association (NSA). The most influential part of my experience though, was going on alternative spring break trips. The trips were basically volunteering your spring break to help out in a different state that could use a few helping hands. The amazing area that I went to for two years in a row was New Orleans! I fell in love with the culture, people, and city in general. So much so that I decided to join AmeriCorps and serve a whole year there! I graduated May 2013 and move down to New Orleans in July. I would have never taken this path without my alternative break experiences and transferring to Saint Rose.

Saint Rose had definitely changed my life and had given me the most amazing experiences that I wouldn’t trade for the world!
