Help! I need a job!

In this economy, many college student wonder, Will I be able to find a job when I graduate? The job market is tough, but there are some steps you can take to make sure that you are as prepared as you can possibly be. For that, all Saint Rose students head over to the Career Center.

Last week, I took a day off from student teaching to go to the 2013 Education Expo. I was reluctant to take time off, but it was definitely worth the experience. What is the Ed Expo? It’s a job fair for people in the field of education. The room was full of principals, teachers, speech pathologists, counselors, and other people with jobs along those lines all in hopes of making a connection and finding a job. There were over 20 schools including public, private, charter, and even a couple of schools from out of state. I was able to meet with about eight schools and even got to interview with one of them! Unfortunately for me, there just aren’t too many jobs in this region for elementary school teachers. However, some of my friends who will be certified in high school were pretty much offered jobs!

How did I know about this opportunity? Well, the Career Center, of course! There were flyers and emails sent out alerting all that may be interested in this event. They encouraged us to sign up early. By doing so, we received weekly updates on what schools would be attending. Plus, we got the fancy printed name tags that made us look a bit more professional.

The Career Center is extremely helpful when preparing for interview situations. They will critique your resume and even conduct a mock interview with you! Another awesome service is the Credential File. This is 100% confidential and contains letters of recommendation, your official transcript, your resume, and anything else you would want a potential employer to see. If you apply for a job, all you have to do is alert the career center and they will send all of this to the employer for you! It makes it super easy to give employers all of the information they need so that they can hire you… hopefully!

Anyone seeking employment should take advantage of their services. They can help you find a part time job, internship, summer job, on campus job, and of course, a job after graduation! Everyone should sign up on ecareer center, which is their job database. If there is a job that is posted for which you qualify, the system will send you an e-mail alert to let you know. How helpful is that?!
