Bringing It Home – The Saint Rose Blog

Hey Everybody!

My name is Zak Barnett, and I’m a proud member of the Class of 2016 here at The College of Saint Rose!  I major in Communications and have a minor in Music Business, but when I started here two years ago, I was a Music Industry major.  Regardless of this change, music remains my true passion.  I love singing and even write my own lyrics!  I’m from a small town in upstate New York called Greenwich.  If you haven’t heard of it, that’s because it’s home to more cows than people.  It’s about an hour away from campus and, as of this year, I make the commute twice a week.

Living on campus my first two years was definitely helpful with adjusting to college life.  Time management is the key out here, but sometimes the key doesn’t fit quite right.  I’ve had plenty of all-nighters in the computer labs with friends working on assignments due the next morning!  While I don’t like not getting sleep, I know my work needs to get done sometime!  If nothing else, college taught me that time should be before 2:00 in the morning.

Regardless of the difficulties in getting adjusted, as well as the ones I still face, my college experience here at Saint Rose is something I wouldn’t trade for the world!  I’ve met so many incredible people and done so many things I wouldn’t have had the chance to if it wasn’t for this school!  From all of  the awesome shows in Jack’s Place, to my work study experience recording live audio with Sean Wendell, as well as the long days in the Massry practice rooms, and long nights in Brubacher Hall with good friends, I love The College of Saint Rose!

I’ve particularly enjoyed being a member of MISA, the Music Industry Student Association.  It’s one of our on-campus clubs for students of all majors who love music and want to be involved in the industry.  I’ve helped set up and tear down the equipment at some of our shows in Jack’s Place.  The artist’s aren’t the biggest names out there, but they’re always talented performers.  If you go to a show not knowing the artists’ names, you’ll be leaving with a new favorite band!  And the best part is that the bands stay at their merchandise tables after their sets and meet the fans!  Go add them on Facebook to get all the latest news about upcoming shows at Jack’s Place!

Well, there ya have it: that’s the tip of the iceberg that is my busy, busy life.  If you have any questions about me, the College, the industry program, or just want to talk, feel free to leave something for me in the comments!  I love meeting new people and making new friends, and I would love to see what you all have to say!

Until next time,

Zak Barnett
