I KNOW WHAT I’M DOING WITH MY LIFE (sort of)

Folks, I finally did it.

I figured out the meaning of life, the true meaning of peace, solved world hunger… all of the above. My life is officially completely together.

Well, sort of. What really happened is that I declared my major: communications with a concentration in film and new media. Doesn’t that sound so official? I feel like a real person, a real college person, who has direction and purpose and knows what they’re doing with their life.

Actually, I don’t feel that way at all. To be honest, I decided to declare kind of randomly. I’ve been back and forth between declaring either education or communications for about three or four months. My good friend Mike Aurrichio was also between these two excellent majors, although he ultimately chose education (but I’ll let him tell you about that some other time).

I think the real reason I decided to declare was because I realized that no matter what I choose to be my major right now, I can still do and become whatever I want to be. I filled out the most not-scary little half sheet of paper, and BOOM. I went from exploratory to communications in about five minutes. Choosing your major is important, don’t get me wrong. But just because you decide that it might be interesting to study something in school doesn’t mean that it defines all of who you are. So yeah, I’m a communications major, but I’m also a sister, and a best friend, and a taco enthusiast. I don’t fit into just one category, and I don’t need to.

I’m studying something that interests me, and that’s all that’s changed. So really, nothing at all. I still wake up every morning and lament about doing my laundry and procrastinate doing my homework.

So basically what I’m trying to say is, if you’re scared about coming to college and having to figure out what you want to do with your life, don’t be. College is about discovering what interests you and what you want to learn about to become a better person, not about getting a job that you can deal with for the rest of your life.

You got this. You can be whatever you want.

Signing off until next time,

Amelia Bedelia

PS- If you are sure of your major and stuff, that’s awesome too! We need people like you in the world so keep doing what you’re doing (:
