Bringing It Home – The Saint Rose Blog

In it, to Win it!

Hello Everyone!

My name is Jacquelyn C. Richards, a recent graduate from The College of Saint Rose. This past May I received my Bachelors of Arts in History and Political Science with a dual minor in English and Music. I am thrilled to be sharing my summer journey, interning with Legal Services Corporation, with you!

I first became aware of this once in a lifetime opportunity as a Project 70 intern from the St. Rose Career Center website. Unfortunately, I had noticed early on that the internship was geared towards rising juniors and seniors, not graduates. Nonetheless, I was determined to at least make it known that I was interested and overall the best person for the job. So I emailed the Assistant Director of Alumni Relations, Whitney Pagano, in charge of receiving applications. I had informed her of my interest, why it was important to me and briefly explained why I was the best person for the job. She of course encouraged me to apply but did let me know that my class standing would be taken into consideration.

With levels of excitation boiling, I had finally heard back that I was one of three lucky applicants to move on to the next phase of interviewing. I was officially in it, to win it. My second interview with President, Jim Sandman, was less complicated due to his good-natured personality that resonated through the phone. This allowed me to loosen up and offer a true testament to my talent, dedication and professionalism. I walked away from my interview feeling self-assured that I gave it my best. When I received a call from Wendy the next week, and she told me that I was selected for the position. The word “happiness” could not describe the internal joy I was feeling.

Not only was I excited to be offered a position with Legal Services Corporation in Washington, D.C. but in just a few weeks I would be graduating from the College, the first in my family. The pieces of my life puzzle were coming together and there was nothing more that I wished for.

I made a pit-stop to see Mr. Daniel Nolan, alum of the College of Saint Rose, as well as mentor. I sat with him and we talked about my aspirations and fears for after graduating, and within an hour I was at peace. I felt confident graduating, and I felt confident arriving in D.C. to intern for Legal Services Corporation. This is going to be an interesting summer for me and I hope my story inspires others to get involved like I did, to get where I am today.

Below is a picture of me at graduation. Congratulations Saint Rose Class of 2014!
