International Students at Saint Rose: Meet Lina Araujo G’19 of Colombia

We sat down with a few of our international graduate students, who joined us from a variety of countries around the world. They shared their thoughts on Albany and the area, what they like about being here and what they miss about home, and their best advice to their peers for settling into their new home at Saint Rose.

Favorite thing about Saint Rose: My favorite thing about Saint Rose is the small classes, since I did my undergraduate at a similar college back in Colombia.
Advice to new international students: My advice is to be open-minded! Unlike other countries, the USA has a mix of cultures, so it is better to be ready to learn about others, and at the same time, you can teach people about yours. Another piece of advice is to take it easy about the language. It is overwhelming at the beginning, but Saint Rose offers different tools to get better. And, also making friends will help you feel more comfortable.
Hardest thing to get used to here: The hardest thing for me was managing my study. Everything goes fast! Every week, I have to read, do assignments, do quizzes, discuss on Blackboard, and do some written cases.
Miss most about home: Definitely I miss my family and friends the most since they are my support, and I do not have any family here. I feel that the way of making friends here is different, so it has been difficult for me.
One way in which school is different here: It’s easy to get in touch with departments and professors if you need some help.
Say something about yourself, in your home country’s language: Me gusta estar rodeada de las personas que amo y ser el apoyo de todo aquel que lo necesite.
Translation: I like to be surrounded by the people I love and be the support of everyone who needs it.
