Bringing It Home – The Saint Rose Blog

Julia Childs Jr.

This year, I am living in Centennial Hall. I am so happy and so lucky to be in such a beautiful living space while still remaining on campus! With this transition to Centennial, I decided that I would get rid of my meal plan altogether and utilize the full kitchen that this dorm provides in each apartment. Cooking meals sounded so easy at the time and so exciting! However, that is not always the case. Sometimes there is time to make a nice meal, and other times I need to resort to something simple like mac and cheese or a frozen pizza. However, having to figure out my own meals this year at Saint Rose has taught me how to actually become a pretty decent cook! It has always been a running joke in my family that I am not a very good cook. I am the kind of person who doesn’t follow directions very closely, and have been known to occasionally overlook an imperative ingredient to a recipe (oops!). When I told my mom that I didn’t want a meal plan this year she laughed and said, “You’ll go hungry for sure”. Because of that, I decided I was going to try and reverse my reputation and really try to cook healthy simple meals for myself.

Cooking your own meals can be healthy and fun!

Cooking your own meals can be healthy and fun! This fall, I have been cooking lots of peppers and acorn squash! Yum!

At first it was a little rough, but there are so many resources online to help guide you through recipes step by step. Although I started off shaky, I have come a long way. I do miss eating at the dining hall, especially at breakfast time- nothing beats breakfast there! Giving students the option to cook for themselves while living not only in Centennial, but any of the on campus houses is not only giving them the ability to eat something different that the dining hall may not offer, but it helps teach us a life skill that we will need when we graduate and move into the real world! I’ve been told I make a pretty delicious Baked Ziti dish- anyone hungry? Happy dining!
