Lake Atitlán

Hello everyone! We can’t believe how quick our time in Guatemala is flying by, but we’re still having a lot of fun. On Sunday, we boarded a bus at 6:30 AM to head to Lake Atitlán. The two hour ride proved to be worth it, however, because the sight was breath-taking.

Lake Atitlán has several little villages around it and most of them are only accessible via boat. We were fortunate enough to be able to visit three of the towns. First, we went to San Juan where we sat down and enjoyed some amazing coffee. This was energizing after the two hour car ride and 45 minute boat ride. We explored the town and then loaded into the back of a truck to be driven to San Pedro. This experience of riding in the truck was so fun, exhilarating and would have been totally illegal in the United States. Hey, we wanted an adventure, and we got it!

In San Pedro we went to a women’s cooperation. Here we got to see the process of making the wool and dyeing it different colors to create products. This is a large way that women contribute to society. We really appreciated the fact that 95% of the proceeds benefit the woman who created the product you purchased.

After San Pedro, we went to Santiago. By this time we were really hungry so we stopped for some delicious food and were able to do a little shopping. Overall, this was an amazing and relaxing day. A lot of us were able to soak up the sun and enjoy the gorgeous views.
