Bringing It Home – The Saint Rose Blog

Maybe having a job isn’t so bad after all…

Like many other college students across the nation, I work part time aside from going to school. I work at one of the local malls in the area, and have a management position at a children’s clothing store. Although having a job has taken up a lot of my valuable time, it has been teaching me a lot about topics that correlate with my major. Yes, you read that correctly and are not going crazy! A retail job is helping me prepare for my future career. Who would’ve thought, right?! Retail jobs have bad reputations, but they can really teach us public relations and advertising students a thing or two.

Communications is all about the media and all of its forms. There are many branches to communications such as public relations, advertising, journalism, broadcasting, film and new media, and so many more; which are all offered here at Saint Rose. My concentration is in Public Relations and Advertising. Every time I step out into the world, I see it through the eyes of someone who can make anything even the tiniest bit more appealing. If I eat a local restaurant that I think is amazing but does not have enough customers, I think to myself, “How can we get more people in here? What do they want, and how can we give it to them?” These are the questions that all corporations ask themselves whenever trying to market or advertise to their specific audiences.

Retail jobs give us a hands-on experience of what exactly those people want. Think about it; in my case, I am surrounded by pictures of models wearing the clothing that I am selling while I hand out coupons, sell merchandise to customers, and persuading customers that our store is the store that they should always buy from. Public Relations and Advertising is all about appealing to that specific customer. Through my retail job, I am learning how to sell things to a specified audience: moms and the occasional dad, grandparents, or aunts & uncles. I am learning about what the customer wants and how I can get them to purchase an item from my specific brand. So next time you’re working a retail job, try looking at it through a different point of view because maybe having that job isn’t so bad after all.
