MISA at Pyramid Lake

Fall is always a fantastic time of year here at Saint Rose!  There are so many events happening on or around campus!  Starting out with the Week of Welcome for the incoming freshman class, then Parent’s Weekend, the annual Fall CLASSIC, Rocktoberfest later on, and large off-campus events like Lark Fest and the Madison Street Fair!  My favorite fun fall festivity would have to be MISA’s Pyramid Lake camping trip.

As you may know, MISA, or the Music Industry Student Association, is the music industry club on campus.  We host concerts, clinics and other music related events in Jack’s Place, the concert venue located in the Hearst Center. This trip is an annual adventure to the Pyramid Life Center on Pyramid Lake, way out in Paradox, New York.

This small slice of the Adirondacks has a beautiful natural landscape complete with acres of forest, hiking trails, log cabins that blend perfectly with the environment, and, of course, the wide open waters of the lake.  Guests are allowed to wander freely through nature, take kayaks out to the island in the middle of the lake, go fishing, use the basketball and volleyball courts on the grounds, sit around the campfire playing music, and any other fun camping activities you could imagine!

While this yearly weekend away is definitely about relaxation in part, MISA has a job to do out on the lake.  Those who go on the trip should try to have some sort of musical performance ready for our open mic on our second day at the camp.  Some people do covers of songs they enjoy while others perform pieces they’ve written themselves!  We gather for dinner in the dining hall and have fun playing music for our peers, as well as the volunteers at the Life Center.  It’s always a great display of all the talent we have in the St. Rose music program!

This year we added something new to our vacation activities.  One of the Artist Management classes at Saint Rose, the one I am fortunate enough to be in, had the opportunity to put together a private, unplugged performance for the volunteers and MISA!  There was a small audition to see who would get to play and we ended up with four performers: Sam Gleason, Matt Dalton, Brandon Powers-Green, all of whom are very unique singer/songwriters, and Six Miles from Cork, a cover band that focuses primarily on Irish music.

This year was an absolute blast, as it always is out at Pyramid Lake!  If you’re at all interested in joining the fun next year the only cost is an active membership with MISA!  Come to a meeting to see if you might be interested.  We get together every Thursday at 6:30 in the Hearst Center, room 120!  We hope to see you there!
