Pro Tip: Collect Quotes – and You Can Quote Me on This

In addition to Dr. Pepper, Swedish Fish and Twitter, I’m also addicted to quotes, and the act of collecting them. I scribble down funny, smart, or insane (or all three) things professors say, dumb jokes from friends, and of course also those intellectual quotes you come across. Here’s why. Need a good laugh? Find that really dumb joke your dad told you last week. Need some motivation? Here’s one: “Confidence is knowing that the walls that hold you back will not always be as high. Either they will fall or you’ll grow.” –  Curt Mega. Want to sound smart and motivations? Quote John F. Kennedy: “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” Quotes are great, really great. Have you ever thrown a quote into an in-class essay or assignment? It makes you look super smart, and it can also help you come up with more ideas.

never-too-old

Quotes don’t have to be limited, I quoted Doctor Who in my SAT essay. You can quote TV shows, song lyrics, celebrities, politicians, books, and anything else, and they all have their uses.

“When you’re a kid, they tell you it’s all… grow up. Get a job. Get married. Get a house. Have a kid, and that’s it. But the truth is, the world is so much stranger than that. It’s so much darker. And so much madder. And so much better. ” Doctor Who (season 2, episode 10)

“I think that we all do heroic things, but hero is not a noun, it’s a verb.” – Robert Downey Jr

“The loneliest moment in someone’s life is when they are watching their whole world fall apart, and all they can do is stare blankly.”- The Great Gatsby

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” – Thomas A. Edison

Write them on post-it notes and stick them on your wall. Cite them in papers. Throw them in in class discussions.  Text your friends. Use them. Collect them. Love them.

Listen for them, write them down, and when that’s not working you can check out BrainyQuote, GoodReads, as well as Pinterest for more.
