Restore the Shore

It wasn’t too long ago that Sandy hit and destroyed the shore and hundreds of homes. After talking to a few people on campus, we decided that we wanted to head south to help. This past weekend, I took three Saint Rose staff members and 10 fellow students home with me. My parents borrowed air mattresses from everyone we knew and pushed the couches aside so that we could all stay the night.

The next morning, we went to Long Beach Island to help clean up. We were tasked with cleaning up the beach accesses starting at 11th st. in a town called Ship Bottom. We were able to make it down to 3rd Street and up to 16th street. There weren’t any houses along that strip that were completely destroyed, but there was a good amount of debris on the beach. We found a lot of pressure treated wood and some 4×4’s with a pointed edge, which led us to believe that it was once a part of someone’s deck.

While some people have recovered and moved on, it’s important to remember that there will be some people that will need help for months and perhaps even years to come. It felt good to help clean up after Sandy and we had a lot of fun doing it. It’s never too late to see who could still use some help after something like this!
