Saint Rose Celebrates Constitution Day September 17th

Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the United States Constitution by 39 delegates to the Constitutional Convention on September 17, 1787.  Constitution Day was formally established as a federal observance in 2004 through a Congressional amendment proposed by Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia.  Senator Byrd envisioned Constitution Day as an opportunity for all Americans, and especially students, to learn more about our nation’s foundational document.  Constitution Day also recognizes those who, by coming of age or naturalization, have become citizens.

The College of Saint Rose is proud to celebrate Constitution Day with several events and programs.  Check out the Constitution Day information on our Office of Financial Aid webpage.  You’ll find a list of Constitution-related resources and details about a special September 17th webcast, Constitution Hall Pass: The Presidency, presented by the National Constitution Center.  This interactive presentation traces the history of the American presidency and is particularly relevant with the 2012 election right around the corner.  In addition to the September 17th webcast, the College will celebrate Constitution Day with the Seventh Annual Kermit Hall Memorial Lecture, delivered this year by Dr. Ellen Schrecker, Professor of History at Yeshiva University.  The lecture, entitled “Under Control: Political Repression in America from the Puritans to the Patriot Act,” will be held at 7:30 PM on Thursday, September 20th in the Saint Joseph Hall Auditorium at 985 Madison Avenue.

We hope you will use Constitution Day as an opportunity to enrich your understanding of the important history and ideas associated with the United States Constitution.  You can get warmed up by testing your current Constitution comprehension with this What’s Your Constitution IQ? quiz.  Happy Constitution Day!
