#Singing Problems

So for this week, I’ve been dealing with some vocal health issues. Being a singer, it is especially important to take care of myself; my instrument is my body, and when my body is not functioning normally, I cannot use my instrument and practice my craft. Personally, I’ve been trying to take care of myself because I have to perform in Convocation on Friday. Thankfully, I’ve been using these simple remedies to make myself better, and they’ve been working out great!

  1. Drink LOTS of tea! As a singer, my personal favorite is Traditional Medicinals Throat Coat tea. It’s an organic tea that literally coats your throat and takes away any irritation. More importantly for me, though, is the fact that it allows me to be able to sing! And it tastes great to boot! But, honestly, any tea will do; I’m also a fan of green tea, which has healing properties in it. So really anything is fair game 🙂
  2. Eat healthy! Yes, I know when we’re sick all we really want is to eat anything we want, but taking care of yourself is important on ALL levels. I am a huge fan of chicken broth soups with lots of veggies and protein.
  3. Take vitamins! Taking these may be tedious, but it helps in the long run. If you’re not a fan of swallowing pills, do what I do: take gummy vitamins!
  4. SLEEP. I know this is something everyone will agree to enjoy doing. Getting at least 8 and 1/2 hours of sleep is good for adults in general, but it’s especially important when you’re sick.
  5. When sleeping, keep your hear elevated. When you have an issue with your sinuses, it helps to sleep with a few extra pillows. This opens up the airways and prevents your sinuses from dripping into your chest.
  6. Be Positive! Studies show that having a positive attitude will boost your immune system. It’s been working for me so far!

So what happens when you’ve been doing these things and you end up getting sick anyway (Like me – I have an ear infection and slight fever)? Right now, I’m taking a personal “sick day” so I can regain my strength and be ready to conquer the week. But what do I do with all of my free time! Lots of things! Here’s a list of activities that can make your “sick day” into a productive one!

  1. Get some  homework done! Yes, I know, not everyone will be willing to do this one their sick day, but why should you let being sick take away from your productivity? I’ve personally done a LOT of work, which will help in the long run!
  2. If you have no work, clean your room! You should be trying to keep everything in your room sanitized anyway, especially if you have roommates. You don’t want to get them sick, now, do you?
  3. If you’re too dizzy to do any physical activity whatsoever, pick out a movie and watch it! I’ve been watching Smallville and staring at the beauty that is Tom Welling. Other times I like to watch a Disney movie to cheer me up. Whatever the case, watch away! If it’ll make you happier, go for it!
  4. Shower! Hot steam from a shower can clear your sinuses, and it’ll make you feel better too!
  5. SLEEP. Yes, this isn’t quite productive, but if you’re sick to the point of not being able to do anything with your life, you might want to catch up on your sleep (like I should be doing now, but alas, I love to blog).

The most important thing to do when you’re sick is to go to the doctor. Health Services at The College of Saint Rose really helps me out a lot when I’m not feeling well; the Nurse Practitioner and Doctor there are very nice, and have given me a positive diagnosis each time! They really do care about your well being and are willing to help in any way they can. Health Services also offers free Flu Shots during Flu season, so if you want to get one, that’s the place to go!

The most important piece of advice I can give you is to WASH YOUR HANDS. If your friends, roommate, or professor are sick, please please please wash your hands frequently. Trust me, you do not want to get sick. I know from experience.

Stay tuned for my next blog, in which I will talk about my performance at Convocation, my parents visiting, and the Golden Notes! Thanks for reading! 🙂

Best Wishes!
