Tabletop/Board Gaming Club (Vox Organizationis)

For now, this is just a working title, because the club I present to you today, is not currently officially a club at Saint Rose. My friends and I play board and card games basically every other night over in Golub Hall. Personally, I had no siblings, my parents never wanted to play games, and my high school friends lived too far to walk or bike every day for me to play, so I love it. Over the Break (Spring, Mid-Winter, whatever you wanna call it), one of those friends of mine decided he wanted to create a social gaming club here at Saint Rose. When he told me, I was ecstatic and wanted to help out a lot, and so basically, for now, this is a shameless plug, as well as a pre-meeting informational page. As such, it will be a slightly different format.

Let’s see what Isaiah Agojo, the brainchild of this project, has to say about it:

Q: What is the purpose of your organization?

A: The purpose of the Saint Rose Board Games Club is to promote the social, competitive and joyous aspects of the Board Games and other forms or Tabletop Gaming! We may be called the Board Games Club but we want to encompass card games, collectible trading/battle card games, role playing games, war/scrimmage gaming, party games and all sorts of other Tabletop games. We will accomplish this by providing a weekly or bi-monthly venue for the Saint Rose community to gather together and find others who are willing to play games with them and by creating events revolving around our love of gaming!

Q: How many members are you expecting right now?

A: It is very tough to say right now. We know there is interest in the club. There is a pretty sizable Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh fan base here at Saint Rose and we want to welcome them into the folds of our club. I know I have several friends who love board games and games like Dungeons and Dragons and are very invested in making this club a success. We are holding interest meetings March 20th and 21st so we have a better gauge of how many members are to be expected.

Q: When and where will your regular meetings be?

A: Right now we are still in the preliminary stage of the Club creation process. We want gauge how often people would like to come. Personally I’m shooting for once a week or once every two weeks.

Q: Is anybody allowed to attend meetings? Are there any students that you’d especially recommend join (specific majors, interests, etc.)?

A: We want to be as inclusive as possible! Anybody that is interested in board gaming and or tabletop gaming is welcome to come and become a member. If you want to play Monopoly, Chess or any other game, we want Board Games Club to be the best place to find new people to play with! But we won’t stop at board games! Games like Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh are great collectible card games and we know a lot of Saint Rose students are really big fans of those games, we want Board Games club to be a venue for those gamers to find friends and competitors! Several people I’ve talked to, including myself, are also interested in encompassing roleplaying games like Dungeons and Dragons or Pathfinder! Someone also approached me with interest in war games like Warhammer 40k. We want games club to be welcoming of all gamers hardcore and casual!

Q: What events/activities do you think will be available? Do members get any special opportunities through this club (guest speakers, trips, shows, etc.)? Any club clothing?

A: Right now we’re just worried about becoming a club, but we do have ideas for events! Depending on the demand for games like Yu-Gi-Oh or Magic: The Gathering we’d love to hold competitions those games or we could sponsor a team that would represent Saint Rose in a gaming tournament. Another event we’d like to hold would be a Game Night. The Game Night would consist of classic board games like Monopoly, Sorry, Chess, Scrabble, Chess, Checkers, Chinese Checkers and other well known classics and then throw in a few games that are lesser known but are just as good if not better like Settlers of Catan, Gloom, Ticket to Ride, Dixit and many several others. We give out prizes to the winners and it’d be an amazing time!

Interest meetings will be held on Wednesday, March 20 and Thursday, March 21 at 7:30PM in the main lounge outside of Starbucks. You only need to come to one of the two. Come with a list of board games that you could bring to meetings to play or suggestions of abstract games!
