(Answered November 2012)

Q: What is the purpose of  your organization?

A: Identity… every person has an identity. Whether it be Lesbian, Gay, Straight, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersexual or allies to any and all of the aforementioned groups; we need to encourage every person to come out and express their identity in a safe and supporting environment. The general focus of Identity is to promote awareness, tolerance, and understanding of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. The club addresses issues faced by people who identify as LGBTQI. The purpose of Identity is to provide and maintain a safe space for LGBTQI students and their allies on campus.

Q: Who are your officers?

A: ” President: Stephanie Santiago, Class of 2014. Vice-President: Alex LaFrance, Class of 2014. Secretary: Kaleb Catricala, Class of 2014. Treasurer: Tara Parker, Class of 2014. Public Relations: Sam Peterson, Class of 2015.”

Q: How many members do you have this semester?

A: “We have approximately 25 members this semester.”

Q: When and where are your regular meetings?

A: “Our regular meetings are Thursdays from 8:30-10PM in Lima Basement.”

Q: Is anybody allowed to attend meetings? Are there any students that you’d especially recommend join?

A: “Identity meetings are considered a safe space, so anybody is welcome to come and join us and talk about anything they want, knowing that they are speaking in a safe environment where nobody will judge them or repeat what they have said to others.”

Q: Do you work with other clubs often?

A: “We work with a couple clubs every semester.”

Q: What events have you held or participated in before? What are some of your favorites?

A: “Every year we have Ally Week and Pride Week, but this year we are adding Trans* Awareness Week and we are hoping to continue hosting that every year from now. My favorite event would be Pride week because everyone looks forward to it and it’s our biggest week of events for the year.”

Q: What events do you have planned for later this semester or next semester?

A: “We are currently hosting Trans* Awareness Week [November 12-16, 2012] and we are looking to get a couple speakers to come to campus and talk about different subjects. Next semester, we are currently thinking of who to bring in [to speak], we may have some entertainers, and we are also preparing for Pride Week.”

Q: Do members get any special opportunities through the club? Any club clothing?

A: “Yes, members are always welcome to the events because they are part of the planning that we do every meeting. Members also get t-shirts at the end of every spring semester.”

Q: Are there any dues that are required to be payed in being a part of the club?

A: “Not at all.”

Q: Is there anything else you would like to add to those who might join?

A: “Just that we love seeing new faces at our meetings and we hope that we could provide those future members with any information they are searching for.”

Q: Who can be contacted for further information?

A: “For further information, anyone can contact our club e-mail at Identity@mail.strose.edu or look for the officers during office hours at Avila Hall.”

Q: What do you and your members consider to be the slogan of your club?

A: “Every Person has an Identity.”

Q: Do you have any quick tips for being a better ally?

A: “Stay informed.

Speak up.

Be honest.

Support equality.

Come out as an ally.”
