Cleaning Out the Clutter

I don’t know about you, but the first few weeks of the semester are always a bit stressful. You’re trying your hardest to get into the swing of things and get used to a new schedule, you join new clubs and do new activities, and you do your best to stay on top of all of your work. But, despite all of your efforts, everything kind of just catches up to you, and you’re left mid-semester feeling overwhelmed.

Well, personally, I am at that place right now, and I’ve done something to help make my life easier: Clean Out the Clutter. This isn’t just a literal phrase – although cleaning certainly can help make your life easier. This means getting rid of all of the things in your life that are not essential. I often use the term “don’t waste space in your brain“, and I’ve been working on prioritizing the things that I should be concentrating on. Here’s my personal list of things you should concentrate on keeping when cleaning out the clutter in your life:

  •  Your Friends: They are going to be your rock through everything. I would be nothing without my support system. Having great friends like Lauren Russo (check out her blog!) makes my life much more fun, enjoyable, and easier to handle. Make sure to let your friends know how much you love and appreciate them, because you can never take anything for granted. To my friends, I love you very deeply, and I hope you always know that 🙂

Some of my amazing/beautiful/wonderful friends. I love you all <3

  • Positive Role Models: This can be a teacher, a parent, or a peer that you look up to. I am so blessed to have so many positive role models; the faculty in the music department at The College of Saint Rose alone supports me and carries me through everything that troubles me in this world. The Residence Life Professional and Student Staff  have also helped me through this semester’s challenges. Lastly, I have my parents to look up to. They are such strong people, and I am so blessed to have such an amazing family to rely on.

Me, my Dad, and my Mom! I love them so much!

  • School Work: The thing I always remind myself is that I am at college for my studies. Therefore, I focus on eliminating the things in my life that distract me from doing my school work (AKA Facebook, Candy Crush Saga, Tumblr, etc). While I am not as successful in eliminating these things, I am doing my best!

If you are feeling stressed this semester, don’t forget to focus on the good things in your life – your friends, your family, and anything else that makes you happy. Let go of the things that don’t matter, like stressful thoughts/situations, negative attitudes, and anything else that may be bringing you down. Take time to actually clean your room, clean out the unnecessary things, and let go of the thoughts and people that are bringing you down. You are in charge of your future, and if you concentrate on the good, then good will follow.

If you ever need help with doing this, you can always confide in your Resident Assistant (if you live on campus), or talk to someone in the Counseling Center. The Saint Rose community is a loving one, and there are many people who would love to help you clean out the clutter in your life!

What are some of the good things you like to focus on? What is some of the clutter you need to get rid of? Let me know in the comments!

Stay strong, Saint Rose! 🙂
