Lauren Billington ‘20, a management major with a concentration in sports management and minor in marketing, is finishing her final year at Saint Rose strong. A member of the women’s soccer team, in the 2019 season, the Golden Knights etched their place in history, claiming a conference title, regular-season title, regional title, and clinching a spot in the NCAA Final Four. Throughout this whirlwind experience, Billington made the College’s dean’s list while juggling her major and minor requirements.

“This past year was the biggest year soccer-wise and academically for me,” she said.

Being a student-athlete presents its own set of challenges, but Billington said her biggest lesson was in time-management. She quickly learned her first year here that she would need to stay on top of her school work more than if she was a non-student-athlete. It also helped that the faculty and coaching staff made it easy for her and her teammates to strike a balance between academics and athletics.

“My coaches are always there to help with any type of homework because they are both teachers,” she said. “My professors were always understanding when I had to miss classes and were also interested in how our games went.”

Throughout her time at the Huether School of Business, she interned at Syracuse University, where she worked in athletic communications. She has enjoyed taking classes in sales and the hands-on, collaborative opportunities it has afforded her and her peers. In fact, Billington said most of her business classes are interactive, which makes for a more productive and enjoyable academic experience. After she graduates this May, Billington hopes to pursue a career in digital marketing, athletics, or perhaps, a combination of the two.

“I know with my major I can do almost anything,” she said.
