Rachel Salasky #10
Sport: Volleyball (Outside/ right side hitter)
Hometown: Virginia Beach, VA
Class Year: 2017
Major: Communications (Journalism) and minor in Business Administration
Favorite study spot: Hearst building
Favorite food: Blue crabs
One interesting fact about yourself: I have a birth mark on my leg that I can make vanish
What set SR apart from other schools: “The communications program here was something I really liked. I already knew what I wanted to do. The size of the school was great. I didn’t want to be just a number. I liked being able to build a relationship with my professors. I also really wanted to go to New York.”
Why SR Volleyball: “The head coach, Brian Goodale was at one of my matches in Washington D.C. I reached out to him and called him and he told me he wanted to change my position from middle hitter. He moved me to outside and I was excited about the position change.”
Most memorable moment or game: “Senior year state semi-finals when I was 17-years-old. I blocked a shot on the right side. The score was 25-24 and if we lost we knew the match would be over. My block ended up winning us the set and we went on to win in 5. It was a game highlight of the year.”
How you got involved: “I used to ride horses a lot. I was about 10 when I got a flyer about sports and I told my mom I wanted to try volleyball and I fell in love with it. My mom plays tennis, my dad golfs, and my sister plays Volleyball.”
Do you have a saying or motto you live by: “I like to think everything happens for a reason whether it be in sports or life.”
Where you draw your inspiration from: “My family. They’re always there for me and they are my number one fans.”
How do you prepare before a game: “I mentally prepare myself to go out there and perform to the best of my ability. I like to talk to my teammates before games and get excited for the game.”
What are you looking to accomplish this year: “I want to leave with no regrets. I want to have fun and do well. I want to be happy with my performance. I want the team to do well and I want to make the most of my last season.”
My Comments/ takeaway from the interview: Rachel Salasky is a fourth year student at The College of Saint Rose looking to finish out her last year at Saint Rose strong. She’s an active student-athlete who really enjoys broadcasting. During our interview I got to ask Salasky about her time on the volleyball team. “Our first year, the five of us seniors got to build a connection and it’s really helped us understand each other. Everyone contributes to the team very well. We’ve all come into our own and I think we have a strong group of players and a lot of talent. Once I’m gone it shouldn’t be a huge issue for them rebuilding,” Salasky said. “On the court, they’ve helped me build confidence and understand the game more. Off the court, I learned to build friendships with people I normally wouldn’t meet. We’re like a family,” Salasky said about her teammate’s impact on her. Rachel Salasky is a true competitor. It was nice getting to see genuine love for a sport she really enjoys. She’s embracing her last season and doing everything possible to make it a memorable one. She has a natural talent for the game and I wouldn’t worry about her leaving it all out on the court and take advantage of every chance she can. I would highly recommend going to their games to see the intensity of a college volleyball match. Good luck Saint Rose Volleyball!!! #GoGoldenKnights #GoldBlooded #GoldenKnightSpotlight
