Mary Lambert and Howie Day at Massry

Friday, October 17, Mary Lambert and Howie Day were right here in the Massry Center for the Arts!  Their show was part of an annual performance series known as the Premiere Performances.  For those who don’t know, most of the concerts held in Massry (for groups such as the Masterworks Chorale, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, etc.) are free and open to the public.  What’s different about Premiere Performances is that people need to buy a ticket to get in.  It’s just like a concert at any other venue, but right here on campus!

I had the privilege of working this event as an usher.  Salvatore Prizio, my boss and the presenter of every Premiere Performance, had me work backstage keeping people out that weren’t supposed to be there.  Because of my placement back there, I got to meet the performers before they even went on!

Howie Day was a really nice person.  You probably remember his single “Collide” from 2003, off of his debut album “Stop All the World Now.”  Regardless of having a big hit in his repertoire, he was very down-to-earth unlike many artists you hear about these days.  He was very open with everyone about how nervous he was, expressing that he felt he was “the college act of, like, 10 years ago.”  But he tucked away any nerves he had when he went on stage.  His performance was fantastic!  Of course, he played “Collide” but he had a full set full of songs from his apparently large selection.  I didn’t know any of Howie’s other music before the show, but now I wish I had!  His guitar skills were phenomenal and he is such a talented vocalist!  If you’ve only heard “Collide,” check out all of Howie Day’s music and let me know what you think in the comments!

Mary Lambert and I after the show!

Mary Lambert and I after the show!

Mary Lambert was a total sweetheart!  She was so cheery and talkative with everyone backstage.  I would be too if I was headlining a tour promoting my debut album!  During her performance, Mary took several moments to talk to the audience about her many messages in her music.  The theme behind all that she said was simply being comfortable with who you are; a theme made very clear in her single “Secrets.”  On top of having this very positive message, she has quite the personality!  She had a hold on the crowd with her music, her message and several anecdotes and jokes here and there.  She got me laughing from backstage!  She also had a more somber side of her performance, particularly her piano and vocal cover of the classic song “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield.

After the show Mary had a meet-and-greet with several VIPs, then changed out of her nice concert dress into sweats which only added to her casual and friendly demeanor.  Then she thanked all of the staff who worked backstage and asked us all if we wanted pictures or autographs!  She was an amazing performer and a wonderful person, and I hope the College welcomes her back someday soon!

’tis the season for teas and honey

Everyone. Is. Getting. Sick.

Literally everyone.

Last week, someone in Lima had bronchitis. Even though she’d been on antibiotics for 24 hours, we all were been walking around with our scarves up to our mouths, trying not to breathe in her infected air.

Let’s face it, as much as we love someone, we absolutely positively do not want to share their germs.

But… if we do get sick, what do we do?

First of all, visit health services and see what is going on and if your illness is hospital-worthy. Usually we can tell ourselves, but a second opinion never hurts.

The next step is to drink lots and lots of tea. There are tons of different medicinal teas that you can buy, but really any kind of tea helps. Honey in tea instead of sugar is really good for your throat, and HONEYstly it kind of tastes better (in my humble opinion).

Bottoms up!

Bottoms up!

Foods with garlic in them really fight colds and infections. Garlic is literally a super food. So if Peter at the action station is making pasta and you can get garlic, ask for extra. Trust me.

Don’t go to class. I’m serious. If you really are that sick, you’re not going to learn anything at all. You will be miserable and blowing your nose and coughing and spreading your germs to everyone. The best thing you can do for yourself, and the good of the campus, is take a sick day. This is not to say that if your nose is a little runny you should skip class!!! I’m pretty sure everyone knows how sick is too sick. Not sick of your class or your teacher, but your immune system is literally raging a war inside of you to battle an illness.

Wash your hands. Hand sanitize them. Wipe down the surfaces in your dorm especially door knobs, and your keyboard and mouse wouldn’t hurt either. The other day, my friend Maria barged into my room and sprayed Lysol spray EVERYWHERE. That is dedication, my internet friends.

Don’t be afraid to call your mom if you really do get sick. She knows about this stuff and would definitely be glad to hear from you, even if you’re all stuffed up.

Stay healthy!

PS- My personal favorite tea to drink when I’m sick is Lemon Lift. It’s super refreshing, and honey and lemon go together like PB&J.

The Best Decision I’ve Ever Made

Hi Everyone! My name is Meghan Kiely and I am currently a junior here at The College of Saint Rose! Adjusting to life at college is something that was really difficult for me. Home is four hours away from here, and I had never really been away from home at all until college. That definitely was a hard adjustment and I was very homesick my freshman year. However, I made a huge mistake that could have completely changed my attitude: I didn’t get involved on campus.

There are so many opportunities for students to get involved here at Saint Rose. Last year I decided to take a risk and join a club. I decided to join Student Events Board (or, SEB). This student-run organization helps to plan fun events for students! It was really fun, helped fill up some of my schedule, a good item to add to my resume, and I met a lot of really amazing people!

This year, I was actually chosen to become the chairperson of one of the SEB event boards! I am the chairperson of the Musical Entertainment committee. It’s a huge responsibility, but it’s so rewarding to see so much effort all play out into one amazing event.

I have put on two events so far. The first was Music Fest, and the most recent was Karaoke Night. Music Fest was a night out on the campus green where we feasted on a huge barbecue and learned several country line dances from Kevin Richards, a radio DJ from 107.7 WGNA! About 80 people came out and tried something new and listened to a little country music. It was a blast! Karaoke Night was another extremely successful event, with around 120 people in attendance. We had people singing from 7:30-9:30PM. Some performances were so beautiful and there was so much talent, but I definitely had an appreciation for those who got up there and made everyone laugh and brought a smile to everyone’s faces (AKA. Myles Clendenin belting out “We Belong Together” by Mariah Carey). It was so much fun and so rewarding to see how all my planning and my committee’s planning paid off.

If I had one suggestion for everyone out there it would be: GET INVOLVED. I am so much happier now that I know I have a say in what goes on on campus, and I know that I can help plan an event that everyone will forget about their exams and papers that they have to do and give them a place to just let loose and have fun. Whether it’s Student Events Board, Student Association, an intramural sports team, etc, – Just do it! Take a leap of faith! I promise you won’t regret it.

A Colossal Amount of Awesome

I recently checked out the Alumni Show in the Massry Gallery… it was amazing [also properly known as “Design@Work: The Karene Faul Alumni Exhibition”(which FYI is closing the 29th so hurry!!!)]. There was so much to see and a lot of it was recognizable from companies around the world. It was quite wonderful to see Saint Rose alumni doing what they love with what they learned here as well as being successful at it and bringing it back for us to see.

We are pretty cool. I don’t want to spoil the show by gushing over all the cool stuff but the first thing that caught my eye was an advertisement for the first season of Glee and the show Fringe on Fox (both of which I am a fan). It honestly fills you up with pride to know that one of our Alumni did such great work.

Which brings me to my big ooh aah point. Don’t feel lost. If you find that you have no idea what you want to do after college its okay. One: Do what you love. Two: You had no idea what you wanted to do in college not that long ago. I promise it’ll come to you. Chances are that Saint Rose will have given you the tools you need to succeed and that you’ll be happy succeeding at what you love.

P.S. Speaking of Saint Rose giving you the tools you need, the link on the words Alumni show at the top of this post will take you to the colleges Facebook page (like it!) and an album full of pictures from the show.
